 The Athens County Democratic Party

Athens County has long been a Democratic County however during the last decade it has turned even bluer.  The number of registered Democrats has almost doubled while the number of Republicans has drastically declined. 

The county seat is the City of Athens which has an all democratic city council.  All the City officials are democrats with the exception of one.  In the County the Republicans do not fair much better with all the elected partisian offices held by democrats with the exception of one. 

In 2004 Athens County had the greatest percentage increase in democratic votes of all counties in Ohio.  In 2006 Athens County went for every statewide candidate and delivered 82% of the vote for Democrat Governor Ted Strickland. 

In 2004 when Ohio voters passed a state constitutional amendment banning gay marriage only Athens County failed ot pass it with an overwhelming no vote. 

In 2006 Athens County elected two new democratic congressman Charlie Wilson and Zack Space. 

 Ohio University College Democrats

The Athens County Democratic Party enjoys a close partnership with the Ohio University College Democrats.  Many former Ohio University College Democrats currently hold important positions across the nation in the democratic party.

While members of Ohio University College Democrats provide much needed volunteer effort, the County Party provides guidance and training on campaign skills.

In 2004 approximately 5,000 Ohio University students voted in the Presidential Election.  Ohio University has the only provisional voting location located on it's campus. 

College Democrats are currently conducting voter registration drives on the campus of Ohio University to assist the Democratic candidates this fall.

Ohio University College Democrats meet each Tuesday at 8:00PM in Baker Center Room 231.
